NEW AUTHORS IN OUR MIDST

BOB DART, Class of 1964 has written a new book entitled “Downhome: Dispatches From Dixie”, a collection of stories about the South.  Bob played football at Glynn Academy and served in the Viet Nam War. He retired as a national correspondent in the Washington Bureau of Cox Newspapers, which includes The Atlanta Journal and Constitution.  Bob’s great-great-great grandfather, Cyrus Dart, fought in the Revolutionary War. Bob’s personal memories and historical comments on Glynn Academy’s 100 years of football appear on page 4 of this newsletter.

BRUCE FLEXER, is a St. Simons native and Glynn Academy graduate from 1975, where he played football and baseball.  He just wrote “Buhley Sparks, The Gift” after his son went off to college.  Being an “empty nester” left Bruce shaken as he missed attending football and baseball games with his son.  So he started his 228-page novel as it flowed from memories.   Set in the 1950’s town of Homerville, that Flexer visited with his grandparents, the novel follows a young boy through his baseball exploits.  While this novel took Flexer two years to write, he is already busy on his second one, “Fincher Neck” about football.  Watch for it in bookstores soon!

JESSE TULLOS, Class of 1963, is putting the finishing touches on a book he began in February on the 1964 Red Terrors championship football team. According to Jesse, his materials came from newspaper articles in Savannah, Augusta, Columbus, Waycross and, of course, Brunswick — along with interviews with the players, cheerleaders and students in ‘64.  It is meant to be a capsule of that season and a glimpse of life 45 years ago in Brunswick and at Glynn Academy.      It also includes sections on the history of the school’s football program, the 1949 and the 1958 teams, along with a chapter on Risley High.

Jesse graduated from Glynn Academy in 1963 and missed the ‘63 and ‘64 seasons because of military obligations. His brother, Johnny Tullos was, of course, tailback on the 1964 championship team, so this has been a “cherished project” for Jesse.

Jesse is a retired journalist, having spent 35 years as a sports writer and news reporter, sports editor, managing editor and the last 18 years as The Editor of the Georgetown S.C. Times.
